Distortion
Geometric distortion in photography is a deviation from the rectilinear projection of straight lines. These line do no get drawn straight and intersections of perfect horizontal and vertical lines are not shown in a 90° angle. Distortion is an unwanted aberration especially in architecture photography and wherever the correct projection is needed (photogrammetry). In general symmetrical wide angle designs are less prone to distortion then retrofocal constructions.
There are three basic types of distortion:
-
Barrel distortion
lines get curved outward - Pincushion distortion
lines get curved inward
- Complex distortion (also moustache or gull-wing distortion)
a combination of the above, the distortion shape can change depending on the location on the image circle
All of these distortion types can get corrected with the ALPA Lens Corrector. This plug-in for Photoshop is able to correct the inherent distortion also with shift applied. For further details see the ALPA Lens Corrector product page where you can find the list of lenses supported.
